Flora and fauna at the ECB

Where knowledge grows and nature thrives

The way land is used has a considerable impact on the natural site conditions and therefore on the habitats for flora and fauna. In particular, the sealing of surfaces through the construction of buildings, parking sites and roads leads to the loss of natural habitats.

At the Environmental Campus Birkenfeld (ECB), this is counteracted by targeted measures such as tree planting, hedges, rainwater infiltration and natural landscaping. This nature-friendly design makes the UCB a showcase for sustainable development, where research, education and practiced environmental protection go hand in hand.

Tips and measures

Create habitats in a natural garden, for example with native shrubs and trees, meadows of flowers, deadwood islands and dry stone walls

Maintain moist areas in the garden, avoiding waterlogged conditions

Create sunny depressions, for example ditches and troughs, for rainwater infiltration

Avoid the sealing of surfaces and gravel gardens

The Environmental Campus Birkenfeld

  • is characterised by conscious, sustainable and ecological land use.
  • supports biodiversity and protects existing biotopes – this also applies to new construction projects and the maintenance of existing premises.
  • combines human utilisation with ecological responsibility – it serves people and at the same time remains a habitat for animals and plants.
